Become a Coach

Special Olympics Greater Memphis athletes participate in more sports and at higher levels than ever before. Much of this success can be attributed directly to the coaches. As a coach, you provide the sports skills and spirit that, when instilled, define a true athlete. You are a role model and character builder. You give Special Olympics athletes the most immediate awareness of their self-worth, ability, courage, and capacity to grow and improve.

Step 1: Fill Out Your Forms

Complete the Class A Background Screening (renewed every 3 years). A Class A background clearance is required for any volunteer in close contact with athletes – including coaches, Unified partners age 18+, chaperones, etc. Click here to get your Class A clearance or renewal started.

Please email your completed form to lisa.taylor@specialolympicsmem.org.

Step 2: Complete Protective Behavior Training

Please register on the SO Learning Portal and complete the Protective Behaviors training. No need to submit anything to us after your completion.

Step 3: Complete Concussion Training

All coaches must complete the CDC’s Heads Up Concussion Training course located in the SO Learning Portal. Simply log in and if you don’t see the course in your “My Learning” section, visit the Sport section of the courses catalogue. We will be notified upon your completion so no need to submit your certificate.
